Dog Portraits

Dog Portraits is about capturing more than how a dog looks. Every dog has its own personality, expression and way of interacting with the world. Some are confident and curious, others calm, playful or slightly reserved. In these portraits, we try to translate that individual character into a photograph.

Unlike our more spontaneous photographs of dogs, these portraits are deliberately created. We choose the location, viewpoint, light and composition, and guide the situation when necessary. Yet we do not want the result to feel overly posed. A dog is not a professional model — and that unpredictability is precisely what makes photographing them so enjoyable.

Patience is therefore an important part of my approach. Rather than forcing a particular pose, we give the dog time to become comfortable with me, the camera and the surroundings. We observe its behaviour and wait for the right expression, posture or glance. Sometimes that means sitting perfectly still for a moment; at other times, a favourite toy, sound or treat helps create the attention we are looking for.

The surroundings can also become part of the portrait. A forest, heathland, park, urban environment or familiar place can add atmosphere and help tell something about the dog's life and personality. By carefully using perspective, light and depth of field, we try to keep attention on the dog while allowing enough of the environment to remain visible.

Eyes and expression are especially important to us. A direct look into the camera can create an immediate connection with the viewer, while a dog looking away can produce a completely different mood. Small details — the position of the ears, a tilted head or an alert posture — can transform the character of the photograph.

Ultimately, a successful dog portrait should feel recognisable to the people who know that dog best. It should not simply show the breed or appearance, but capture something of the individual animal behind it.

Dog Portraits is about combining careful photography with patience and spontaneity — creating portraits that celebrate the character, expression and unique personality of every dog in front of our camera.
