Field of Play
Sport is more than competition. It is a world of movement, concentration, emotion and human connection. A world in which months or even years of preparation can come together in a fraction of a second.
Field of Play is my exploration of that world through photography.
At the heart of these projects is, of course, the athlete. The arena becomes the stage, competition becomes the battle, and every movement can lead to victory or disappointment. Sometimes the story is found in the peak moment — the fraction of a second when everything comes together. At other times, it is revealed through motion, a small detail, an expression or the intense concentration before the action even begins.
But the story of sport extends far beyond the athlete and the final result.
There is the coach watching from the sidelines, searching for the right words or gestures. There are the faces before and after competition, when confidence, exhaustion, joy and disappointment become visible. There are fans whose passion transforms an arena, volunteers working quietly behind the scenes, and photographers trying to capture moments that will never happen in exactly the same way again.
I am equally fascinated by what happens away from the obvious action: the preparation, the rituals, the waiting and the moments of absolute focus. These quieter observations often reveal as much about sport as the competition itself.
Through action photographs, portraits, details and documentary stories, Field of Play looks beyond scores, medals and results. It explores the physical intensity of sport, but also its vulnerability, determination, beauty and sense of community.
Some photographs freeze a decisive fraction of a second. Others deliberately allow movement to become a visual language, transforming speed and energy into something more abstract and expressive.
Together, these projects form a broader portrait of the sporting world — from the arena to the sidelines, from preparation to celebration, and from the athletes at its centre to the people who make their performances possible.
Because every field of play contains far more stories than the final result can ever tell.
The Arena
The Arena explores the places where sport comes to life. From intimate local venues to impressive stadiums, every sporting environment has its own atmosphere, architecture and character. These photographs show the stage on which athletes, spectators and emotions come together.
The Battle
The Battle focuses on the intensity of competition. Athletes challenge their opponents, their physical limits and sometimes themselves. Strength, determination and rivalry come together in moments where winning and losing can be separated by the smallest detail.
The Coach
The Coach turns attention towards the people guiding the performance from beside the field of play. A look, gesture or few carefully chosen words can make the difference at a crucial moment. These photographs explore the relationship between coach and athlete, built on knowledge, trust and shared ambition.
The Detail
The Detail looks beyond the obvious action to discover the smaller elements that define the world of sport. Equipment, hands, legs, clothing, marks of use and traces of preparation can tell their own stories. Sometimes a single detail reveals the dedication behind an entire performance.
The Emotion
The Emotion captures what happens when competition becomes deeply personal. Joy, disappointment, relief, frustration and exhaustion can appear within seconds of one another. These unguarded moments reveal the vulnerability and humanity behind sporting performance.
The Portraits
The Portraits steps away from competition to reveal the individual behind the athlete. Without the distraction of action, expression, character and personality become central to the photograph. These portraits explore the people whose determination and dedication normally reveal themselves through performance.
The Fans
The Fans celebrates the people who bring colour, sound and passion to sport. Their anticipation, rituals, celebrations and disappointments become part of the event itself. From a single devoted supporter to a packed stadium, their emotions often mirror those of the athletes they follow.
The Motion
The Motion explores movement as a visual language. Rather than always freezing action, I use motion, blur and longer exposures to express speed, rhythm and energy. The result moves beyond documenting what happened and towards interpreting how the sporting moment felt.
The Peak Moment
The Peak Moment is about anticipation, timing and the fraction of a second when everything comes together. A decisive movement, finish, collision or celebration can disappear almost as quickly as it begins. The challenge is not simply to react, but to recognise the moment before it happens.
The Photographers
The Photographers turns the camera towards those usually standing behind one. Along the sidelines, photographers observe, anticipate and compete with time to capture moments that cannot be repeated. This series offers a glimpse into the concentration, skill and working environment behind sports photography itself.
The Preparation & Focus
The Preparation & Focus explores the quieter moments before performance begins. Warm-ups, routines, concentration and moments of isolation reveal the mental as well as physical preparation behind sport. Long before the starting signal, the competition has already begun in the athlete's mind.
The Stories
The Stories looks beyond individual photographs to explore the wider narratives found within sport. Athletes, teams, events and communities all carry stories of ambition, perseverance, sacrifice and achievement. Through documentary photography, these projects reveal the human experiences behind competition.
The Volunteers
The Volunteers gives visibility to the people whose work often happens away from the spotlight. They prepare venues, support athletes, assist spectators and perform countless tasks that make sporting events possible. These photographs celebrate their commitment and the essential role they play behind the scenes.
