The Preparation & Focus
The Preparation & Focus explores the moments before the performance begins. While sports photography is often associated with speed, action and decisive moments, some of the most revealing photographs are made when very little seems to be happening — when an athlete is preparing physically and mentally for what is about to come.
Before a race, match or routine, athletes often enter their own world. A gymnast visualises an exercise, a runner adjusts the starting blocks, a boxer waits quietly in a corner or an athlete repeats a familiar warm-up routine. These small rituals may appear insignificant, but they are an essential part of sporting performance.
As a sports photographer, I look for the subtle signs of concentration during these moments. A fixed gaze, closed eyes, controlled breathing, chalked hands or the repeated adjustment of equipment can reveal the intensity behind the apparent stillness. Body language becomes particularly important because it can communicate tension, confidence and determination without any action taking place.
These photographs require a different approach from photographing the competition itself. Rather than following fast movement, I observe and wait. I try not to disturb the athlete and look for a viewpoint that allows the surrounding environment to contribute to the story. Light, shadows and carefully chosen details can help isolate the athlete from the activity around them and strengthen that sense of concentration.
Preparation is also a reminder that the performance we eventually see represents only a small part of an athlete's journey. Behind those few seconds or minutes of competition are countless hours of training, repetition, discipline and sacrifice.
The transition from preparation to performance can happen almost instantly. A quiet expression changes, the body becomes tense and attention shifts completely towards the task ahead. Capturing that transformation is what makes these moments so fascinating to me.
The Preparation & Focus is about the quiet intensity before the action — those revealing moments when concentration, routine and determination come together and an athlete prepares to turn years of training into a single performance.
