Cityscapes
Cityscapes explores the city as a constantly changing landscape of architecture, light, space and human activity. From expansive skylines and historic city centres to riverside views and streets stretching towards the horizon, these photographs look at the larger environments in which urban life unfolds.
Rather than concentrating on a single building, I step back and observe how different elements of a city come together. Architecture, bridges, streets, waterways, parks and public spaces form layers that reveal the structure and character of a place. Sometimes a skyline defines the image; at other times, it is the relationship between old and new architecture or the way a city interacts with its natural surroundings.
Light plays an important role in how I photograph these urban landscapes. Early morning can bring quietness and clarity, while the last light of the day can transform familiar buildings into shapes, colours and silhouettes. Weather, reflections, shadows and changing skies can make the same viewpoint feel completely different from one moment to the next.
People may appear small within these wider scenes, yet their presence reminds us that cities are ultimately created to be lived in. A distant pedestrian, busy square or illuminated window can add a subtle human dimension to an otherwise architectural landscape.
Cityscapes is about seeing the city as a whole — its skyline, rhythm, atmosphere and identity — and discovering how architecture, landscape and everyday life combine to create a unique sense of place.
