Working in Layers

Inspired by the complex visual storytelling of Alex Webb, Working in Layers explores how several moments can exist within a single photograph. Foreground, middle ground and background become connected spaces where people, light, architecture and movement interact.

Rather than isolating one subject, I look for relationships between different elements and for small stories unfolding simultaneously. A gesture in the foreground may echo something happening further away, while shadows, reflections, colours or architectural lines create connections throughout the frame.

These photographs often emerge from busy and unpredictable situations. Instead of simplifying the scene, I embrace its complexity, observing how people move through the space and waiting for the different layers to briefly fall into place.

For me, working in layers is about creating photographs that cannot be understood in a single glance. The eye is invited to wander through the frame, discovering new details, relationships and stories along the way.
